Two full days of finding cows and bringing them back down to the ranch from the forest and so far the tally is 181 (day 1) and 102 (day 2) – with a total of 157 cows still to find with only one more day of looking for cows to go.
Day one we spent 7 and half hours in the saddle looking for cows with a great bunch of people. Dually is a great horse and super independent which means she is happy to go explore parts of the forest with just me and her. Not too far from everyone else (always staying in ear shot of others) but happy to see if we can find any cows hiding in the woods. You’d be surprised how hard it is to find 440 cows that don’t want to be found.
We didn’t see any cows before lunch but we did see a moose and her baby – at first from down on the dirt road we did think it was a cow so we up we headed through the bush and scrub only to see a big mama moose come flying out with a baby closely behind. MY FIRST MOOSE SIGHTING!!! And then a little later a black bear came flying out across the path in front of us – wow. All I saw was a big fast black ball of fur.
After lunch we met up with another group to help them with some of the horses they found to help them drive the cows back and collect a few more on the way back. Some are squirley and dart off to the side and up into the shrub so you then have to try to stop them in the tracks or run out wide and hopefully cut them off.
Such a great day!
Day 2 was another great day searching and finding cows with another great bunch of people. Trotting and loping is so easy with Dually, I sure am going to miss that gal.
Oh how I love cattle round up weeks.
